Agustín Lizárraga, a landlord from Cusco-Peru, was the first person known to have found the ruins in the 1890's. He even made a small profit by taking people to the ruins. Nonetheless, lots of people native to the region already knew about ruins. A few years later, American archaeologist Hiram Bingham heard about this place and in 1911 organized an expedition to "rediscover" Machu Picchu. Unfortunately, Bingham took thousands of objects (artifacts, jewelry, mummies, pottery, etc) from the ruins to University of Yale as a short-term loan from the Peruvian government and almost 100 years later, Yale refuses to return the pieces. Currently, Yale is facing a lawsuit from the Peruvian government as they are claiming ownership of the pieces. | ||
